The balloon is calculated to ascend at about 1,000 fpm and it is designed to burst at between 90,0000 and 100,000 feet. Ascent will take about 95 minutes. After the balloon bursts, the nearSpacecraft will fall at 8,000 to 9,000 fpm until the atmosphere becomes thick enough for the parachute to function. The parachute will slow the capsule to about 1,100 fpm at landing. The descent will take 20 to 30 minutes.
An onboard computer will activate the practice ELT at 102 minutes into the flight. That means the nearSpacecraft will be descending when the practice ELT is activated.
Hopefully, recovery teams can locate and track the descent of the package.
In addition to the practice ELT, transmissions from the onboard GPS will let us track the package until touchdown.
This mission is a follow-on to the a seminar held at the Missouri Wing Encampment at Whiteman AFB where the elements of the Near Space Program were described.
The flight will last about 2 hours and will have a practice ELT on board that will activate about 1.75 hrs into the mission.
This configuration will enable a "dual purpose" mission, with Aerospace Education elements in Near Space operations and science as well as Emergency Services practice by providing a 'near real life' simulation of an missing aircraft mission.
